What is Agate?

Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline form of quartz (SiO₂). Rather than growing as large visible crystals, quartz forms an incredibly fine interlocking network of microscopic crystals, giving agate its smooth texture, durability, and beautiful layered patterns.

How Did These Form?

Agates begin inside cavities within volcanic rocks. Over millions of years, silica-rich groundwater repeatedly flowed through these spaces, depositing microscopic layers of quartz. Changes in mineral chemistry during each stage of growth created the natural bands and color variations seen today. Iron-rich minerals produced the warm golden and brown markings, while the soft blue-gray body reflects subtle mineral impurities within the chalcedony.

Natural Druzy Features

Both skulls contain tiny natural druzy cavities. These formed when a portion of the original cavity remained open long enough for miniature quartz crystals to grow inward. During carving, the artisan intentionally preserved these sparkling pockets instead of polishing them away, making each skull truly one of a kind. Small surface pits and crystal-lined openings are natural geological features—not damage.
